Taking Risks

Proving the Power of Prototyping in Game Development

Situation

Executive staff did not see the necessity for developing prototypes, which I knew were critical for successful game development.

Task

My challenge was to prove the need for prototypes to leadership without explicitly disobeying their instructions...

Action

I decided to take the initiative and develop a prototype under the radar. I wanted to demonstrate its importance by showcasing how it helped in approving the fun factor of a game. This process also provided fulfilling work for engineering and streamlined the game development process. I focused on:

  • Creating a prototype that highlighted the core mechanics and fun aspects of the game.
  • Presenting the prototype and its advantages to the executive team.

Result

The executives were convinced of the necessity for prototypes. This led to more games being successfully developed, less time wasted on non-viable ideas, and a more efficient development process overall. As a result, we were able to get more games off the ground and spent less time on games that weren't going anywhere.
